Leopold was born in Burlington, Iowa and received a Master of Forestry degree from Yale University. In 1909 he joined the U.S. Forest Service and from 1914-1924 he supervised national forests in Arizona and New Mexico. He established the first wilderness area in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico and was a founder of The Wilderness Society.
